"Can I join your team?"
This is a question we run across a lot. The more experienced
players who have been on teams before understand there are certain expectations, where as newer players who have
never been on a team before think they just sign up and they get a cool jersey.
And that is why I am writing this article, to let anyone interested see what we look for in a
Potential New
Recruit (PNR) as well as to put straight forward what is expected of members to remain on this team.
NEW RECRUITS;
There are many things we look for in new recruits, more off the field than on. While a PNR
is being considered, we observe the following things and see how they measure up.
- SPONSORED. First and foremost, each and every PNR
must be sponsored by an existing non-officer team member. This sponsor is responsible for mentoring then
PNR, and keeping them in line if necessary. This sponsor is putting themselves on the line for this
PNR.
- Honesty and consideration. We want the kind of players that call themselves
out, even when they are unseen. We also do not want hot heads or players that go out to abuse or put the hurt
on others.
- Over 18. Unless a parent is joining the team with their child, we don't really
consider anyone under 18. We've had minors on the team before and it just doesn't seem to work out. They just aren't
self supportive enough to handle to requirements to remain on the team.
- Being responsible. One of my pet peeves is cleaning up after yourselves.
Unless your mother comes to pick up your mess, you better do it yourself. We are guests on someone
elses property. Whether a business or private, we always try to leave our area in
a better condition than
we found it.
- Everyone contributes. No one is allowed to slack. This applies more so
but not exclusively to
a 24 hour scenario. We have a lot of work to do setting up and breaking down our campsite. We help each
other as much as possible.
When I look at PNR's, I don't look for how EXCELLENT a player they are. That will come in time. I like
to see how much heart they put in and how honest and courtious they are. I would like to think we all get better
each time we play. That and the PNR is learning to work with and fit in with an organized group
of players that already know how to work with each other. As a team, we have to help each other grow and get
better.
Another thing I run into every time a new member is brought in is that I have to put a leash on their creativity.
Let me explain before you get the wrong impression. We always need new perspectives and ideas, but as soon as a
PNR becomes a full blown member, they have a basket full of ideas they just can't wait to unload
on me to start trying to change things. This isn't necessarily bad, but it must be done in baby steps. It's a
real turn-off when a PNR or newly inducted member comes on too strong with suggestions. Change
isn't bad but must be done in moderation.
EXISTING MEMBERS;
This part should be fairly easy by comparison of getting on the team, but for some, it isn't. Members
who are on the team for a while start getting complacent and lazy, and they forget it is a privilege to be on a
team and it requires work. As well as continuing to do the things that got you on the team,
- Dues. To be on Gang-Green, you are required to pay dues. The amount and
what they cover should be explained by your sponsor sometime before being inducted as a full member. Let's
face it, this sport can be pricey. If you can barely afford to play, this is the time to reconsider joining
this team.
- Maintenance Days. We are sponsored by Paintball Command and to maintain that
sponsorship, we perform maintenance days for the field. This could be anything from repairs to constructing
new bunkers. If you cannot make a maintenance day, it is your responsibility to make it up. We are WELL taken
care of by our sponsors, these days are taken seriously.
- Events. Another requirement to be on this scenario team is to make the scenarios and events.
